Membership
Membership has increased steadily since worldsteel (formerly IISI) was founded in 1967. worldsteel represents approximately 170 steel producers (including 18 of the world's 20 largest steel companies), national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes. worldsteel members produce around 85% of the world's steel.
Who can become a member?
Steel producing companies are eligible for either regular or associate membership. Associations, federations, and research associations that deal primarily with the steel industry are also eligible for membership. There are three categories of membership. The following table outlines the requirements for each category.
Regular Regular members produce at least two million short tons of steel per annum and operate as independent commercial enterprises. State-controlled companies must be free to make their own economic and investment decisions and operate in a market-based economy. Regular members are entitled to vote at meetings of the Board of Directors. Member companies have access to the latest technical and economic information affecting the steel industry. Membership provides an opportunity to obtain data on industry trends and performance, and to become involved at an international level in common market-development programmes and initiatives.
Members also have access to the worldsteel Extranet. The Extranet provides members with information about worldsteel's projects, as well as statistical and economic forecasts.
In a survey completed in June 2007, 71% of users rated the Extranet ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’. 95% of the people surveyed said that they would recommend the Extranet to their colleagues. The main reason for using the Extranet was ‘to obtain information relating to committees and projects’.
worldsteel exerts no pressure or politics on its members. worldsteel is not involved in competitive issues between steel companies.
